Agent Ribbons isn’t just a band–it’s a tree house club of post-feminist dreamers trying to find their place in the scheme of things, like a hand-sewn and lovingly-crafted garment in a modern, disposable world. Listening to everything from Eartha Kitt to The Velvet Underground and taking notes from bands like The Shaggs, The Boswell Sisters and The Zombies, they miraculously reconcile seemingly-unrelated genres, sounding something like Girls in the Garage doing the Three Penny Opera. Waxing sentimental over the eerie beauty of all things lost to time, the emphasis is undoubtedly in the lyrics, which favor clever turns of phrase and occasional humor, but never at the expense of the melodic integrity of their catchy, memorable songs.

Originally hailing from the shanty-Victorian streets of downtown Sacramento, they now reside in Austin, TX when they aren’t traveling the world and jamming econo. Since 2007, the band has toured the U.S. more times than they can remember, including multiple appearances at SXSW and CMJ. Some of those tours were with big national acts like Camera Obscura, Cake, Detroit Cobras and Girl in a Coma, and the rest were done vigilante-style in a Chevy Astro. Despite having been banned in the UK in 2008, they have an ever-increasing presence in Europe, built on tours and an appearance at Barcelona’s Primavera Sound Festival. In 2009, they released a popular vinyl seven inch with Acuarela Discos in Europe and Japan entitled ‘Your Love is the Smallest Doll’, which followed the band’s 2008 ‘Agent Ribbons and the Star Crossed Doppelganger’ 7″, released by Seven Inch Project, featuring cover art by Dame Darcy. The band’s first recording was the self-released 2006 debut album On Time Travel and Romance.

In 2010, Agent Ribbons released sophomore album Chateau Crone on Oakland-based Antenna Farm Records. Each copy of the album comes with a 24 page full-color booklet all about their future dream estate, where they can grow old together in a supportive, artistic atmosphere outside the realms of society’s oppressive expectations of aging women. For other aspiring Chateau Cronies that share their witchy Golden Girls dream, the album also comes with a full-color temporary tattoo donning the official crest of Chateau Crone.

Chateau Crone became the label’s largest pre-order and earned the band high praise from NPR‘s All Things Considered, Vice Magazine, and Huffington Post, in addition to a feature and photo shoot in Bust Magazine. Songs from the album appeared on television shows like The Vampire Diaries, Cougar Town, Revenge, and Being Human, as well as on the Quiksilver women’s spring 2012 collection webvideo. They recorded a Daytrotter session and numerous in-studios with BreakThru Radio, KXLU, and KCSB, and performed in-store at Amoeba Records. Camera Obscura declared Agent Ribbons their new favorite band in Pitchfork, and the ladies’ signature “granny frocks and school girl socks” fashion has been celebrated with a ModCloth clothing line inspired by the band. They also released a couple of well-received videos for songs from the album, “Oh La La” and “Dada Girlfriend”, directed by Cassandra Lee Hamilton and Chelsea Wolfe (Sargent House), respectively.

Agent Ribbons will be touring throughout the fall in support of their upcoming Antenna Farm Records release due out September 11th, ‘Let Them Talk’, the 5-song digital EP and limited run 3-song 7″ featuring a bonus cut not on the digital version. The songs are also available in a limited run cassette release on Portland’s Cassingle and Loving It entitled ‘Family Haircut’, delivered complete with tufts of hair from the extended Agent Ribbons family of fans and friends. The new tracks are receiving considerable buzz, with “Family Haircut” appearing on Paste Magazine, Vice Magazine, Impose Magazine, Bust Magazine, Spinner, Side One Track One,, The Daily Grackle, and Young Creature among others.
