Weekly Volcano previews Molybden show

Weekly Volcano previews Molybden’s show in Olympia at Rainy Day Records:

Musically, Woman Who Left Behind is lushly spare, and Tess Seipp’s tremulous, silky voice wraps around the four tracks like a nice hemp sandal. Growing up 62 miles from the Mexican border in the Chihuahuan Desert city of Marfa, Texas (known for its Minimalist art and the 2006 filmings of both No Country For Old Men and There Will Be Blood) and coming of age selling vinyl in Pacific Northwest record stores, Seipp, who is also known as Molybden, tells tales of the homeland and ponders the world around her, pulling together influences from Elliott Smith and Patti Smith to Charlie Feathers and Rosanne Cash, as well as paying homage to poet Edna St. Vincent Millay.

Heartbreaking Bravery reviews Molybden 7″ “Woman Who Left Behind”

Heartbreaking Bravery reviews the new 7″ from Molybden, “Woman Who Left Behind”:

There are very few new releases that have existed decidedly outside of the punk spectrum to catch this site’s attention. Molybden’s Woman Who Left Behind found itself squarely in that category when it first came in as a submission…[Molybden’s] natural ability to command with a minimal palette is evidenced immediately with the title track that leads off the collection. Her voice is masterfully controlled, arresting and enticing all at once. There are shades of Cat Power, Feist, and Joanna Newsom inflected throughout “Woman Who Left Behind”. Using multi-track vocals and just a touch of reverb, Seipp’s slightly left-of-center lyrics gain an emphasized introspective context.

A uniquely-gifted songwriter and singer from Marfa, Texas, Tess Seipp is Molybden. She’s shared a stage with Mt. Eerie and Calvin Johnson, and released and album called Songs from Lincoln that haunts and enchants. She’s soon to release a new 7”, and this is its title track, “Woman Who Left Behind”. It’s spacious and magnetic, stopping time and inviting you into its own mysterious but kind world.

Denton Record-Chronicle features Molybden

The Denton Record-Chronicle asks Molybden about her tour and new 7″ “Woman Who Left Behind” in advance of her upcoming Denton show.

Great big chunks of space separate the layers of Molybden’s music, evoking longing and seeking. Is the voice we’re hearing a flesh and blood transmission, or an echo of something that faded from reality light years before?

New song: Molybden – “Woman Who Left Behind” on The Joy of Violent Movement

Molybden’s beautiful new song “Woman Who Left Behind” is up over at The Joy of Violent Movement:

The desert city of Marfa, TX is 62 miles from the Mexican border, and the city has developed a reputation for it’s minimalist art scene, and was interestingly enough, where most of the most disturbing sequences of both No Country for Old Men and There Will Be Blood were shot.

The Austin, TX-based singer/songwriter Tess Seipp, who writes, records and performs under the moniker of Molybden was raised in Marfa, TX and in some way, the locale has heavily influenced her work as you’ll hear on the hauntingly sparse and eerily beautiful “Woman Who Left Behind,” which will appear on Seipp’s four song 7 inch Woman Who Left Behind slated for a February 25 release through Berniece Rode Records.

As you listen to the track, you can tell that it was recorded on analog tape, as it has a warm, dustiness of old analog complete with it’s imperfections and creative techniques to create certain effects — e.g., to create the reverb on the backing vocals were captured by having Seipp sing into the crevices of the back of a piano in the studio during the backing vocal tracks.
