The Peculiar Pretzelmen perform in-studio this morning on WBEZ in Chicago!
The slightly sinister sounds of the Peculiar Pretzelmen: In the dark corners of a smoke-filled bar live the Peculiar Pretzelmen. Part Tom Waits, part Zydeco, the Pretzelmen provide fun and fright all in the span of a single song.

Das Klienicum features Borrowed Beams of Light’s single “On The Wings Of A Bug”. Google roughly translates a sample:
The orientation is refreshing, juvenile, almost infected by exuberance. Hookline eats his way through the dense harmonies and entablature… You will find an album that alternates between the tides, the movements of eyes that would otherwise operate in opposite directions. Here they draw in quiet concord with the extrusion of a truly balanced with love music. Folky elements can be found, sometimes cloaked in the hymnal, but also first-class popmomente, where succulent rock ‘ n’ roll was highlighted.

Lazy-i previews the Chastity Belt & Pony Time show in Omaha:
House of Loom is hosting a very cool indie/garage show featuring PNW band Chastity Belt. The band’s latest album, No Regrets, carries on the spirit of ’90s college indie (i.e. early Liz Phair, etc.) and is pretty fantastic. Also on the bill is Seattle garage duo Pony Time (Per Se Records).

The 2nd single from Borrowed Beams of Light’s forthcoming album On The Wings Of A Bug is up over at The 405 – check out “Songbird Bouquet”!
Melding ominous wedding bell chimes with slick harmonies, ‘Songbird Bouquet’ is a delectable marriage of pop and rock…It’s a delightful mixture of instruments, and is a bit like they’ve tamed the atmospheric indie-rock of Grizzly Bear into a big, huggable teddy.

The South Bend Tribune interviews The Peculiar Pretzelmen in advance of their tour date. Here’s an excerpt on why they build their own instruments:
“You can’t walk into Guitar Center and ask them if they have something that sounds like a robot’s heart exploding. They’ll say, “We have these drum machines.’ No, no, no. I want a bicycle wheel!”

Newcity Chicago features Pony Time and recommends their show at Township with Chastity Belt:
Beetham’s willingness to poke fun at both himself and rock-bro sexism impressed me, and I was equally impressed with Pony Time’s bouncy, buzzy single “Lori + Judy.” As a two-piece, Pony Time manages to use the minimalism to their advantage with short songs that play up Stacy Peck’s pulsing drum work and Beetham’s nasal, sneering vocals, like a Fred Schneider who can actually sing.

Rochester City Newspaper features The Peculiar Pretzelmen show:
The Peculiar Pretzelmen is the sort of band that you could imagine drinking absinthe or traveling along the bowels of the carny circuit with. The LA-based duo draws its musical influences from Depression-era barn-burning blues, throwing in an edgy punk ethos. The Peculiar Pretzelmen churns out the devil’s blues as competently as Elmore Leonard cranked out “Pulp Fiction.”…The Peculiar Pretzelmen invokes images of “Murder Ballads”-era Nick Cave or Tom Waits inside a speigeltent. The pair infuses minimalist primal energy into its tunes and makes an occasionally stale genre sound gothic and spooky.

Kingston Times interviews The Peculiar Pretzelmen in advance of their stop at The Anchor during their fall tour. Here is an excerpt:
“There is no well-tread path that actually gets you anywhere. Get the machete, hit the jungle and walk towards something that smells good…We’re living on the road banging drums and hollering for dollars hoping for the crowd to decode some of our signal. We are always reaching into every nook and cranny of this country. We won’t stop ’til our voodoo is on every frequency in every dimension.”

Boise Weekly previews Pony Time and Chastity Belt’s upcoming show at The Neurolux:
The novelty of the White Stripes was in the amount of sound the duo produced. The staying power of the band came from that sound: raw and visceral, but still totally listenable. Seattle-based duo Pony Time follows that same formula, creating layered garage-y punk tunes that belie the band’s small membership. The tracks on 2013’s Go Find Your Own probably sound recorded much as they do live—up-tempo tunes pummelling the listener with singer-guitarist-bassist Luke Beetham’s sing-shout style and drummer Stacy Peck’s machine-gun fire percussion. If you don’t at least tap your feet when listening to Pony Time, check your pulse.

KDHX features the new single by Borrowed Beams of Light “On The Wings Of A Bug” as Song of the Day!
There’s no getting around it: “On the Wings of a Bug” by Borrowed Beams of Light (Adam Brock and friends of Charlottesville, Va.) sounds a lot like vintage Lindsey Buckingham; there’s also no getting around how enthusiastically Brock channels that influence into something fresh and fetching.
