Sacramento News & Review previews There Is No Mountain‘s show in Sacramento:

…dark, eerie and unsettling. The couple evokes a certain sense of minimalism, but between the nuanced, dynamic songwriting, the spooky harmonies and worldbeat influence, they really fill the songs out and create something truly unique.

Those Manic Seas tour dates

The first thing people tend to notice when Richmond, VA post-punk/dance-rock band Those Manic Seas takes the stage is their lead singer Kilroy — at 9 feet tall, plastic, with a closed-circuit television for a head, he makes for an arresting figure. But once the “four” piece starts playing, the front-mannequin quickly fades as the focal point of Those Manic Seas. Beyond Kilroy’s cold smooth vocals — which Windy City Times praised for “the glacial beauty of his baritone [that] telegraphed bewilderment, vulnerability and fear” — lies a talented trio of humans delivering wire-tight post-punk grooves.

Those Manic Seas, who have drawn comparisons to bands such as MuteMath, The Killers, Interpol, and Broken Social Scene, put a lot of effort into honing a tight and compelling live show. Kilroy, who took a year to create, isn’t the only aspect of their live show that the band built. “We built and run our own light show (which the drummer controls live during the show),” drummer Daniel Medley told RVA Mag. “I want to create an emotion. [I] want people to…go home with a story. We want our set to be a manic ride, and we want to force the audience to challenge their relationship with the band during live shows.”

The band — comprised of Daniel Medley (drums, sampling), Drew Rollo (guitar, synths), and Justin Jones (keys), in addition to the aforementioned Kilroy on vocals — are on tour to celebrate the recent release of their new single “Outlier,” which Sound of Confusion called “a big song designed for big stages,” while they prepare for the release of their debut full length album, co-produced by Darren King, drummer of New Orleans-based alt-rock band MUTEMATH. In addition to King, the band is working with John Moran at Richmond’s Sound of Music Recording Studios for the new album.

Willamette Week reviews There Is No Mountain album

TINMWillametteWeek

Willamette Week reviews LUNA by There Is No Mountain, out on January 15th from ORG Music:

Luna, which doles out sadness and quirky optimism in equal measure. Abrupt tempo changes alter many of the tunes within the course of a few bars, transforming spare arrangements into complex orchestrations that highlight guitarist Matt Harmon’s virtuosity and place Kali Giaritta’s wispy vocals at the fore.

Portland Mercury staff pick: There Is No Mountain

TINMPortlandMercury

Luna album release show for There Is No Mountain is a Staff Pick in the Portland Mercury:

There Is No Mountain, born of the now-defunct Americana group the Ascetic Junkies, combine traditional folk songwriting with Glenn Kotche-worshipping avant-garde percussion. The songwriting—ostensibly split between the two multi-instrumentalists, Kali Giaritta and Matt Harmon—falls on the more traditional indie side of the ‘experimental’ tag, but their textures recall a chilled-out Dodos or a non-aggressive Buke and Gase.

Tour Dates: Deaf Poets

DeafPoetsbyNataliaBorges

“In a city dominated by hip-hop and EDM, it’s tough for a band to cut through all the noise — even when it’s rocking out at 11 with buzzing guitars and hard-hitting drumming. Truth is, it takes songwriting chops and an engaging live show to snag the Magic City’s attention, no matter how loud you crank the amps. Duo Sean Wouters and Nicolas Espinosa have hit on the perfect combination of aggression and craft. Wouters, a Miami Beach native, and Espinosa, an Argentine who moved to Miami as a kid, met in elementary school and have spent years finding a musical groove together. Since 2009, they’ve played as Deaf Poets, bringing together garage rock and grunge for an oddly ’90s yet contemporary sound. The pair just wrapped up a small U.S. tour around the South and parts of the Midwest to celebrate the release of their debut full-length, 4150, an album featuring plenty of indie-rock goodness in cuts such as “Can’t Breathe” and “This Pain.” And with smaller indie labels always eying South Florida for the next big thing (see Surfer Blood and Jacuzzi Boys), it’s only a matter of time before someone picks up these guys. This is exactly the kind of racket that’s worth tuning out the DJ.” – Miami New Times, Best Band of 2014
