Copperfox single “War Horse” premieres on Surviving the Golden Age

CopperfoxSurvivingtheGoldenAge

“War Horse,” the first single from Copperfox’s forthcoming EP HAUNTS, just premiered over at Surviving the Golden Age!

[‘War Horse’] straddles the line between shoegaze and jangle pop. With singer Lisa Garcia’s reverbed vocals, the track is reminiscent of Lush or Dum Dum Girls. With its energy and surfy vibes, its a summer ready track released just before Christmas.

Glacially Musical interviews There Is No Mountain about their forthcoming album Luna, tour plans, and how they create their textures and soundscapes:

We were just trying to see what we could pull off with our minimal set-up. Seeing what sounds we could create and learning what dynamic range we could inhabit with just guitar, drums and keyboard…I can run the gamut between folky finger-picking and doom riffs in the same song if I want to (and who wouldn’t want to?).

The Alternate Root reviews Paul Benjaman Band’s new album

PaulBenjamanAlternateRootReview

The Alternate Root Magazine reviews Paul Benjaman Band‘s new album Sneaker:

Paul Benjaman decorates with fall color patterns on Sneaker…Paul dips his audio pen in the landscape of Oklahoma on the Horton Records release. The label is based in Tulsa, OK, as is Paul Benjaman, who never forgets the Tulsa Sound of JJ Cale on the album as he gives it a seat next to a 2015 groove. Label mate, and Hard Working American, Jesse Aycock, provides pedal steel guitar on the album as Paul Benjaman Band stays true to the sound, righteously following its path while still managing to drive slightly outside it tracks.

Copperfox to release 4-song EP “Haunts” on February 5th

Copperfox to release 4-song EP Haunts on February 5th

Copperfox, a dreamy indie/psych-pop quartet based in Nashville, began in Portland, OR as a duo comprised of guitarist Rory Mohon and singer Lisa Garcia. After releasing a couple of EPs that elicited RIYLs ranging from Neko Case and Band of Horses to The Head and the Heart and Mazzy Star, the pair moved to Nashville, continuing to develop a sound that featured haunting pop melodies over moody chord structures while welcoming new members Andrew Bottini (bass), and Stephanie Kincheloe (synth, guitar and background vocals). After a year together, they found themselves writing in an entirely different genre altogether, retaining the atmospheric sensibilities at the core of Copperfox but now relying heavily on synthesizers and drum machines, which were becoming a growing passion for songwriter Mohon.

“When we moved to Nashville and added members, our sound naturally changed. Where we once had pedal steel giving atmosphere to the songs, we now had synths and that alone was a huge shift in our sound,” says Mohon. “We decided to dig deep and push our sound — Lisa leans more towards atmospheric music, so the transition was not only natural for her, but intentional. It was important to her to have a cohesive sound that more accurately reflects us as musicians and artists.” The band emerged with their third EP (and first release from their new Nashville home), Haunts, full of spacious layers highlighted by Garcia’s chilling and evocative vocals and Mohon’s warm resplendent guitars.

Haunts emerged from a gradual progression of writing and ditching songs repeatedly. “My growing love for synthesizers helped me to look at songwriting from a different angle,” reveals Mohon. With Haunts, Copperfox incorporates new influences — the EP includes two original tracks, the desert-noir of “Warhorse” and the epically evocative “Feel in the Void,” remixed by their side project D’ark, which re-imagines the compositions filled with synths layered on top of drum machines pounding out slow tempoed beats. Both Copperfox and D’ark are driven by mesmerizing vocal melodies and wet guitar. Copperfox is the hero’s journey, while D’ark navigates through the void.

Haunts was mastered at Magic Garden Mastering by Grammy-winning engineer Brian Lucey (Black Keys, Beck, Arctic Monkeys), and will be available for digital download on February 5th, 2016.

Nooga.com reviews There Is No Mountain

ThereIsNoMountainNooga

Nooga.com‘s Joshua Pickard reviews “Song of Seikilos” from There Is No Mountain‘s forthcoming album Luna, out on January 15th from ORG Music:

…draws on the fuzzy psych and folk landscapes of the ’60s to fashion a modern, unexpectedly hook-laden set of rhythms. You can hear some of the same oddly textured sounds that bands such as Dirty Projectors and Grizzly Bear peddle, but There Is No Mountain is able to create a unique and singular expression based on these influences; there’s no sense of imitation or mimicry. They are simply realizing that these sounds can be translated into an affecting and honest homage—one that gives credit where it is due while also allowing the band to form their own rhythmic individuality.

Glacially Musical reviews There Is No Mountain’s album “Luna”

Glacially Musical reviews There Is No Mountain‘s album Luna — get it on CD or digital download on January 15th from ORG Music:

Swirling, ringing, and fuzzy guitars dominate the musical landscape, but they cannot compete with the “dueling” vocal arrangements. Both Harmon and Giaritta have unique and powerful voices, and then there’s those drums…The voices are diminutive, but powerful. The guitars are heavily effected, but the soul rings clear.

There Is No Mountain to release sophomore album “Luna” (Org Music)

Portland, Oregon’s There Is No Mountain, a married duo who specialize in complex psych-pop that draws comparisons to Dirty Projectors, Buke & Gase and Fleet Foxes, will release their sophomore full-length Luna on January 15th from Org Music on CD and digital formats.

There Is No Mountain, comprised of drummer/vocalist Kali Giaritta and guitarist/vocalist Matt Harmon and named for the Donovan lyric (and the zen koan that inspired it), approach songwriting like composition, starting with a simple song and developing more difficult arrangements, adding percussion and guitar effects. The pair, who played NYC’s Lincoln Center of the Performing Arts as part of last year’s American Songbook series, keep the complexity a layer beneath the surface, primarily impacting audiences with their infectiousness and palpable chemistry, as they combine elements of Americana, folk, psychedelic rock and pop, classical and world music, and even occasionally metal.

The band released a pair of 3-song EPs in 2015 comprised of tracks from the 12-song album Luna, entitled Sea of Storms and Sea of Islands. As guitarist Matt Harmon told Vortex Music Magazine, the new releases are named for several “seas” on the moon, with this record highlighting the couple’s stormiest songwriting to date. “We’re working with the moon theme because a lot of these songs deal with heavier, darker themes in our own lives, and we’ve spent a lot of time walking around at night, sharing a joint and gazing at the moon, drawing a sense of perspective and peace from it,” Harmon says.

Written while on the road, most of Luna’s songs evolved throughout the band’s travels. Playing over 250 shows in 40 states between 2012 and 2014, crashing with strangers met on CouchSurfing.org, Giaritta and Harmon gathered a whirlwind one-city-per-day impression of the country while writing the album. Ultimately, Luna became a record of their own exploration of the highs and lows that come with the touring lifestyle. Starting with the second track “Sadness,” the band embraces the desire to “just ‘listen’ to moments of sadness, doubt, anger and anxiety,” and allow them to be honest reactions to the world, instead of attempting to cover them by putting on a fake smile and waiting for negative emotions to blow over.

Following “Sadness,” the album spirals downward, progressing through optimism, longing and questioning, finally hitting the emotional low point of “Black Hole (Part 1)” and “What If?” — two down-and-out examinations of fear and depression. Through indulging in this trip to the dark side, the album’s emotional pay-off comes in the form of the album closer “Song of Seikilos,” the duo’s take on a 2000-year-old mantra about living in the moment and letting grief go, acknowledging that, no matter what, time will erase everything they try to hold onto. “’Seikilos’ isn’t a white-washing of emotions,” says Harmon. “It’s a hard-won expression of peace in the middle of a storm that started with the album’s early determination to ‘listen to sadness.’”

The new music was recorded utilizing the band’s minimal live performance set-up, built around a live take of guitar and drums and incorporating their blend of effects pedals, a motley collection of toms and snares with dishtowels muting them and assorted hand percussion, piano and organ sounds, and two voices. The recording faithfully recreates the live touring arrangement, showcasing the band’s impressive fullness. Utilizing a similar set-up, There Is No Mountain played a well-received set at Volume Festival in Spokane, and Treefort Festival, where The Oregonian‘s David Greenwald called There Is No Mountain “the most unique act I saw.” Audiences often express surprise at the abundance of sound created from the duo’s acoustic guitar, minimal snare/floor tom/aux percussion setup, vocals and single keyboard, which they worked to capture accurately on Luna, recorded at Map Room Studios and the band’s own home studio with production, mixing and mastering by Matt Harmon and assistant production by Leigh Marble.

Paul Benjaman Band’s “Sneaker” Top Track of the Week at The Alternate Root

PaulBenjamanAlternateRootTopSong

The Alternate Root Magazine chooses Paul Benjaman Band‘s “Sneaker” as its top track of the week!

JJ Cale set the time for the Tulsa Sound, and Paul Benjaman Band are the Tulsa torchbearer’s carrying JJ’s groove. “Sneaker” slithers and slides like a loose electrical cable and heads for the dance floor as Paul Benjaman counts to ‘move to the beat of the two and the four.

Independent Clauses premieres Pageant’s video “Don’t Stop the Rain”

PageantIndependentClauses

Independent Clauses premieres Pageant‘s new video “Don’t Stop the Rain” from the new EP Endless Sun, coming out on November 13th:

[‘Don’t Stop the Rain’] is a jaunty duet that draws heavily on indie-pop and folk conventions without falling neatly into either category. The vocals are the feature here, with Derek and Erika Porter’s voices intertwining throughout the tune as leads and backup vocals. There’s some pedal steel and harmonica to counter the vocal focus, while the bass guitar does some admirable work keeping the tune traveling sprightly on.
